Invisalign Frequently Asked Questions

What is Invisalign®?
What are the primary benefits of Invisalign?
Can I go to any dentist to be treated with Invisalign?
How will Invisalign effectively move my teeth?
What are aligners made of, and what do they look like?
How old is the technology?
How many patients are being treated with Invisalign?
Has the FDA cleared Invisalign?
Do Invisalign aligners contain Bisphenol-A (BPA)?

Q: What is Invisalign®?

A: The Invisalign® system is the virtually invisible way to straighten your teeth and achieve the dazzling smile you’ve always dreamed of. Using advanced 3D computer-imaging technology, Invisalign depicts your complete treatment plan, from the initial position of your teeth to the final desired position. Then a series of clear aligners are custom-made for your teeth – and your teeth only – to move them little by little. Each aligner is worn for about two weeks before being replaced by the next in the series, until the final position of your teeth is achieved. Your Invisalign treatment time will be determined by your doctor, based on your specific needs.

Q: What are the primary benefits of Invisalign?

A: Invisalign aligners are practically clear. No one may even notice that you’re wearing these virtually invisible “braces,” making Invisalign a seamless fit with your lifestyle and day-to-day interactions with others.

Invisalign is removable. Unlike braces, you have the flexibility to eat and drink what you want during treatment by simply removing the aligners. And you can also remove the aligners to brush and floss as you normally would for fresh breath and good oral hygiene.

Unlike braces, there are no metal brackets or wires with the Invisalign system that could cause irritation to your mouth. Plus since your office visits during treatment don’t involve metal or wire adjustments, you’ll likely spend less time in the doctor’s chair.

And finally, Invisalign allows you to view your virtual results and treatment plan before you start so you can see how your straight teeth will look when your treatment is complete.

Q: Can I go to any dentist to be treated with Invisalign?

A: While Invisalign can be used with virtually any treatment philosophy, special training is needed. All dentists interested in treating patients with Invisalign must attend and complete specialized instructional sessions to become trained Invisalign providers before cases will be accepted from their office. New Era Dental specializes in Invisalign in the Cambridge, Massachusetts area.

Q: How will Invisalign effectively move my teeth?

A: Like brackets and arch wires are to braces, Invisalign aligners move teeth through the appropriate placement of controlled force on your teeth. The main difference is that Invisalign not only controls forces, but also the timing of the force application. During each stage, only certain teeth are allowed to move. These movements are determined by your doctor as he or she maps out your unique Invisalign treatment plan.

Q: What are aligners made of, and what do they look like?

A: The virtually invisible aligners, which are made of a thermoplastic material uniquely developed for the Invisalign treatment plan, look similar to tooth-whitening trays. Invisalign aligners are custom-made for you and only you to move your teeth in the sequence determined by your doctor.

Q: How old is the technology?

A: In 1945, Dr. H.D. Kesling envisioned that one day modern technology would enable the use of a series of tooth positioners to produce the kinds of movements required for comprehensive orthodontic treatment. Technology has made this vision a reality. Using advanced computer technology, Align Technology produces Invisalign, a series of customized clear appliances, or aligners. Each aligner is worn sequentially by the patient to produce extensive tooth movements in both upper and lower arches.

Q: How many patients are being treated with Invisalign?

A: More than 500,000 patients worldwide have been treated with Invisalign. The number of Invisalign smiles grows daily.

Q: Has the FDA cleared Invisalign?

A: Yes. Invisalign aligners are classified as Class II medical devices by the FDA, and Align Technology, Inc.has held the necessary 510K clearance from the FDA since 1998 to be able to sell and market the Invisalign system.

Q: Do Invisalign aligners contain Bisphenol-A (BPA)?

A: No. Invisalign aligners and Vivera Retainers do not contain Bisphenol-A or phthalate plasticizers. These aligners and retainers are made with USP Class VI medical grade, high molecular weight, polyurethane resins. Tests have been conducted to determine the biocompatibility of these materials, and show that they are biocompatible and pass all applicable regulatory requirements and thresholds for human wear in the mouth. Of course, as with any medical device, you should consult with your health professional about your aligner or retainer treatment and any applicable risks of use.

To learn more about Invisalign, please visit the Align Technology, Inc. website, makers of Invisalign.

Lumineers Frequently Asked Questions

How is Lumineers ™ BY CERINATE® different than other veneer procedures?
Is there any other Lumineers?
Do Lumineers hurt?
I need braces but don’t want the unsightly appearance. Can I get Lumineers instead?
How long will Lumineers last?
Can Lumineers be removed?
Do I need to use a special toothpaste with Lumineers?
Can I eat sticky food with Lumineers?

Q: How is Lumineers ™ BY CERINATE® different than other veneer procedures?

A: Unlike traditional veneers, Lumineers used advanced contact-lens like material that is ultrathin. As such, Lumineers installation is noninvasive unlike other veneer products which must be fused or bonded to the tooth. Lumineers leave your teeth more structurally-sound.

Q: Is there any other Lumineers?

A: No. Lumineers can only be made from patented Cerinate porcelain that is similar to contact lenses. This revolutionary porcelain is crafted through a proprietary process.

Q: Do Lumineers hurt?

A: No. Unlike traditional veneer procedures, which require a large amount of tooth structure removal, the Lumineers procedure does not require cutting or grinding of teeth in most cases. Once the procedure is complete, there is also less complications and less chances of additional pain compared to veneers.

Q: I need braces but don’t want the unsightly appearance. Can I get Lumineers instead?

A: Usually, yes. Our dentists can evaluate your teeth and mouth structure. For most clients, Lumineers can replace traditional and cumbersome braces.

Q: How long will Lumineers last?

A: Up to 20 years. Clinical testing has proven that a Lumineers procedure done by a trained specialist can last and look great for up to 20 years.

Q: Can Lumineers be removed?

A: Yes. Since they are noninvasive and leave the tooth structurally sound, the Lumineers can be removed if necessary.

Q: Do I need to use a special toothpaste with Lumineers?

A: You should always try to use a low-abrasion toothpaste that will remove plaque, stain and tartar gently but effectively, while leaving the Lumineers (and your real enamel) intact.

Q: Can I eat sticky food with Lumineers?

A: There are no limitations to food choices with Lumineers.

Fillings

Secured and Hidden Fillings

Replace your old, silver fillings with modern and sleek white bonded fillings. Silver fillings were invented in the 1840s for a different generation - today, you can opt for technologically advanced solutions to tooth cavities. New Era Dental provides white fillings to Massachusetts-area clients in a friendly environment.

Benefits to White Fillings

White fillings have several health and personal benefits. Please review them below and then consult with our dentists to schedule your appointment.

Less Tooth Removal

The traditional silver amalgam fillings have to be drilled at least two millimeters deep, weakening the surrounding tooth. Today’s modern white fillings are instead securely bonded to the tooth rather than undermining the actual tooth.

More Comfortable

Yes, you can eat ice cream again! White fillings do not conduct cold or heat like silver fillings. You won’t suffer from sensitivity or tingling with white bonded fillings.

Smile with Confidence

White fillings were designed to blend in with your teeth rather than standing out like shiny silver fillings.

Contact Our Specialists

White fillings are the best option to strengthen weak teeth, yet you should still contact our trained dentists to learn more about this revolutionary dental technique and to schedule an appointment.

Dental Implants

Permanent Cosmetic Dentistry

Our skilled cosmetic dentists can create custom implants to improve your smile. If you need to replace missing teeth, dental implants provide a more permanent solution to dental bridges or dentures. By creating new implants from your tooth’s structure, our dentists can fix a long-lasting solution.

Types of Dental Implants

New Era Dental offers several dental implants. The most common are root implants. This type of dental implant is very effective because it matches the shape and size of a patient’s natural tooth.

For patients who’s jawbones are not wide enough to support a root implant can opt for a plate-form implant. The plate-form dental implant is longer and thinner than the root implant and anchors into thin jawbones.

Contact Our Specialists

While dental implants may be the best long-term option to replace missing teeth, they do pose some risks and maintenance issues like any cosmetic implant. Please contact our trained dentists to learn more about dental implants and to schedule an appointment.
